    Epidermal growth factor receptor function in early mammalian development.Lynn M. Wiley, Eileen D. Adamson & Eleanor C. Tsark - 1995 - Bioessays 17 (10):839-846.
We review here the data indicating a role for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF receptor) signalling in early mouse development. Embryonic development of the metazoan embryo generally begins with the formation of a cystic structure and epithelial layers that subsequently form anlagen of the definitive body parts and organs. For the mammalian embryo, this cystic structure is a blastocyst whose wall consists of trophectoderm, the first epithelium to develop during mammalian embryogenesis. The onset of expression and function of EGF receptors (...)

    Important but Neglected Ethical and Cultural Considerations in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS in Malawi.Adamson S. Muula & Joseph M. Mfutso-Bengo - 2004 - Nursing Ethics 11 (5):479-488.
Southern African countries have the highest HIV infection rates in the world. In most of the countries in the region, the rate among adults is at least 10%. The fight against HIV/AIDS has mostly been inadequate owing to the lack of proper consideration of ethical and cultural issues. In this article, the authors discuss the ethical and cultural dilemmas concerning HIV/AIDS, with Malawi as a case in point. It is argued that increasing financial resources alone, as exemplified by the Global (...)

    When is Public Disclosure of HIV Seropositivity Acceptable?Adamson S. Muula & Joseph M. Mfutso-Bengo - 2005 - Nursing Ethics 12 (3):288-295.
HIV/AIDS is a major public health problem in Africa. Stigmatization, discrimination and lack of appropriate health care are among the commonest challenges that HIV infected persons and their families face. It has been suggested that among the tools available in the fight against stigmatization and discrimination is public disclosure of a person’s HIV seropositive status. While public disclosure of HIV status has a place in the fight against HIV and AIDS, especially by resulting in behavioural change among people who know (...)

The Ethics of Developed Nations Recruiting Nurses from Developing Countries: The Case of Malawi.Adamson S. Muula, Joseph M. Mfutso-Bengo, Joan Makoza & Elita Chatipwa - 2003 - Nursing Ethics 10 (4):433-438.
There is currently a global shortage of nurses. Developing countries such as Malawi are among those hardest hit by this shortage. The demands on available nurses have increased and at the same time there is a lack of interest in becoming a nurse owing to the poor working conditions among those still employed in the service. It is questionable if developed nations should recruit nurses from countries such as Malawi, where severe human resource constraints are being experienced. We argue in (...)

A tangled web: views of deception from the customer's perspective.Erin Adamson Gillespie, Katie Hybnerova, Carol Esmark & Stephanie M. Noble - 2014 - Business Ethics: A European Review 25 (2):198-216.
While there has been extensive research on deception, extant literature has not examined how deception is processed solely from the customer's perspective. Extensive qualitative interviews were conducted and analyzed to inform the proposed framework. Cognitive dissonance theory and attribution theory are used to frame the process consumers go through when deception is perceived. When consumers perceive deceit, they will consider attribution before determining intentionality. Internal attributions relieve the company of wrongdoing to some extent, whereas external attributions lead consumers to examine (...)

    The Closure of the 'Gold Window': From 'Camera-Eye' to 'Brain-Screen'.Morgan M. Adamson - 2013 - Film-Philosophy 17 (1):245-264.
This essay explores the correspondence between cinema and money through an investigation of what I call the 'financialization of the image.' Drawing from the tradition of psychoanalytic film criticism and the cinematic ontology of Gilles Deleuze, it argues that the 'camera-eye' and the 'brain-screen' are distinct modes of organizing cinematic perception in capital. Furthermore, it argues that Gilles Deleuze's understanding of the brain-screen is the most adequate mode of thinking of the organization of subjective vision within control societies and the (...)

    On the philosophy of Kant.Robert Adamson - 1854 - London: Routledge/Thoemmes Press. Edited by A. G. Henderson.
There has recently been a considerable amount of research into the influence of 18th century British philosophy--particularly into the thinking of David Hume on Continental philosophy and Kant. The aim of this collection is to provide some of the key texts which illustrate the impact of Kant's thought together with two important 20th century monographs on aspects of Kant's early reception and his influence on philosophical thought. Contents: Immanuel Kant in England 1793-1838 [1931] Rene Wellek 328 pp The Early Reception (...)

Orphaned atoms: The first M oroccan reactor and the frameworks of nuclear diplomacy.Matthew Adamson - 2021 - Centaurus 63 (2):262-276.
This article examines the attempt by the Kingdom of Morocco—a country of pivotal geopolitical importance in the late 1970s and early 1980s—to secure a research reactor. It finds that by treating that reactor as a diplomatic object, we can observe the different diplomatic frameworks in which that object was conceived of, contextualized, and negotiated. The historical emergence of these frameworks occurred in close relationship with the IAEA, which acted as an intermediary linking various administrations, programs, and countries, including Morocco. In (...)

    Miskawayh on pleasure.Peter Adamson - 2015 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 25 (2):199-223.

Introduction: Power to the image! Science, technology and visual diplomacy.Simone Turchetti & Matthew Adamson - 2023 - British Journal for the History of Science 56 (2):135-146.
This special issue explores the power that images with a techno-scientific content can have in international relations. As we introduce the articles in the collection, we highlight how the study of this influence extends current research in the separate (but increasingly interacting) domains of history of science and technology, and political science. We then show how images of different types (photographs, cartoons and plots) can inform inter-state transactions through their public appeal alongside the better-studied dialogic practices of the diplomatic arena. Don't think for yourself: authority and belief in medieval philosophy.Peter Adamson - 2022 - Notre Dame, Indiana: University of Notre Dame Press.
How do we judge whether we should be willing to follow the views of experts or whether we ought to try to come to our own, independent views? This book seeks the answer in medieval philosophical thought. In this engaging study into the history of philosophy and epistemology, Peter Adamson provides an answer to a question as relevant today as it was in the medieval period: how and when should we turn to the authoritative expertise of other people in (...)

    Al-Kindi.Peter Adamson - 2008 - Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
Al-Kindi was the first philosopher of the Islamic world. He lived in Iraq and studied in Baghdad, where he became attached to the caliphal court. In due course he would become an important figure at court: a tutor to the caliph's son, and a central figure in the translation movement of the ninth century, which rendered much of Greek philosophy, science, and medicine into Arabic. Al-Kindi's wide-ranging intellectual interests included not only philosophy but also music, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine. Through (...)
